"For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach the statutes and ordinances in Israel". Ezra 7:10

PreachThe Biblical Teaching and Preaching School (BTPS) is a dynamic hands-on course which allows the student to gain confidence and begin to develop expertise in the public communication of the word of God in a way that is relevant and serves their audience. The aim of the school is to prepare students for the ministry of teaching and/or preaching in both the local church setting and on the mission field. By the end of the school the student should be able to preach and teach effectively to a wide variety of audiences, with their content well grounded in the Scriptures.

Alongside the ministry development there is an emphasis on the student’s continued character growth, recognising that the authority of a speaker lies in the integrity of their lives.

The BTPS is a 24 week course, with an integrated classroom and outreach/ministry phase.

Classroom Phase 1: (5 weeks)

The first classroom phase will focus on local church-type preaching ministry. This will include how to formulate a sermon that engages the congregation in both exegetical and topical forms, essential skills in sermon delivery, and hands-on experience in a safe environment. The dynamics of an effective home group Bible study will also be addressed, as well as basic skills in children’s and youth ministry communication. Preaching to the unchurched and evangelistic preaching will also be included. This prepares the way for the first outreach/ministry phase.

Outreach/Ministry Phase 1: (4 weeks)

This first outreach/ministry phase will be in partnership with a local church. This will give an opportunity for the skills addressed in the first classroom phase to be consolidated and developed. We will partner with local pastors so each student can join in the life of a church; to preach, lead small group Bible studies and serve in other ministry opportunities that may arise to implement what has been learned and practised in the classroom. The pastor will be invited to mentor the student in these skills. This will also give the student an opportunity to encounter and participate in the life of the local church from the church leader’s perspective.

Classroom Phase 2: (6 weeks)

In this phase the focus will be more on to classroom-type teaching as well as more specialised preaching subjects. This will include: further developing skills in public communication, lesson planning and evaluation, teaching in cross-cultural situations, helps and hindrances of visual aids, effective story telling, identifying and serving different learning styles, teaching non-literate people, preaching effectively from the different genre of scripture, how to teach through a book of the Bible, how to prepare topical teaching for a DTS-type setting, how to integrate the gifts of the Spirit into a preaching or teaching type situation and more. The focus will again be very practical with further opportunity for students to gain confidence in safe learning situations.

Outreach/Ministry Phase 2: (8 weeks)preaching Russia

The students will go out in small teams to locations decided in partnership with the school leader and the students. The likely ministry opportunities would include serving local churches, teaching seminars, teaching on YWAM schools such as SBSs, DTSs, and BCCs. The goal is to provide a wide variety of teaching and preaching opportunities so the student can apply and grow in what has been learned during the classroom phases, as well as serve those they minister to.

Classroom Phase 3:

This concluding week will focus on evaluating and consolidating the lessons learned during the outreach, and bringing the course to a good conclusion.

Requirements

Each student should have an understanding that they are called to preach and/or teach the Scriptures, and it will also be necessary to be fluent in English.

The standard requirement will be successful completion of a DTS, and either a School of Biblical Studies, a Bible Core Course or an equivalent that is approved by the school leader.

The BTPS is an accredited course of YWAM’s University of the Nations earning 24 credits.
