The U of N Kona has a limited amount of financial assistance available to those who meet the qualifying standards of the funds available. These funds are distributed by the University's Financial Assistance Team in accordance with U of N Kona policies and procedures.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply for financial assistance?
You MUST formally apply and be accepted into a U of N Kona school before you will be considered for student financial assistance. Once accepted, your school leader or the Student Services Office will help you secure the necessary application forms.

Is financial assistance available for DTS students?
Generally, no. This school teaches many aspects of the nature and character of God, including his role as provider. Over the last 20 years, thousands of DTs students have experienced miraculous provision before and during their school as they have asked God to provide their school fees. At present, campus funds are available only for students from countries who are unable to do a DTS in their region because of religious persecution or extraordinary hardship. Recommendation from a YWAM leader is required.

Is financial assistance available in other U of N Kona schools?
Yes, but most current funds are designated for students from B and C category nations (as identified in the U of N International Reference Guide). Awards are typically made on the basis of a student's need, leadership potential, a long-term missions calling and clearly stated ministry goals. At present students from industrialized nations are eligible for assistance from only two funds. These include the Mary Graham Endowment Fund (for continuing School of Biblical Studies students) and the DeFreitas Fund (for degree students and long-term YWAMers who have been serving overseas and need further training to continue their ministry).

What are the academic requirements?
All applicants must be in good standing academically, morally and financially with the U of N Kona community. Audit students and those on academic probation are not eligible. Students who withdraw will be expected to repay the assistance awarded them. Students who have an "I" grade (incomplete) will need to complete the course before being considered for further assistance. Students who have failed a course will not be given assistance to repeat the course they have failed.

What does financial assistance cover?
Financial assistance awards are applied to tuition, room and board fees. Airfares, personal expenses and insurance are not covered. Only partial awards are given toward a student's U of N Kona fees. Students can receive financial assistance more than once, but they must reapply for it each time they take a new U of N Kona school.

When should I apply for financial assistance?
There is a limited pool of funds available each term so those who apply up to six months prior to their school's starting date are more likely to receive funds. Completed applications must be received by the first Friday of the month prior to the school starting date. Send completed applications to: Financial Assistance Team, 75-5851 Kuakini Hwy. #35, Kailua-Kona HI, 96740-2199 USA or email them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Any applications received after a school's starting date will not be considered. DOWNLOAD FORMS.

How will I be notified if I have received an award?
Within one week of a decision, the Financial Assistance Team will notify in writing those school leaders whose students will be receiving awards. School leaders have the responsibility of notifying their students.
